Why dugongs
Dugongs feed almost entirely on seagrass. As seagrass meadows decline, dugongs become a visible sign of a coastline in trouble, with consequences for food security, livelihoods, and environmental justice for coastal communities.
Dugong strandings in 2024—about three times the long-term average of roughly 13 per year.
